AI・機械学習・ディープラーニングの違いを解説

AI、機械学習、ディープラーニングの違いとそれぞれの用途を理解し、仕事、学習、研究に役立つツールの選び方を学びましょう。

Key takeaways

  • Artificial intelligence (AI) is the broad field: it includes systems that perform tasks associated with human intelligence, using rules, learning or other methods.
  • Machine learning is a subset of AI: it finds patterns in data rather than relying only on explicitly written rules.
  • Deep learning is a subset of machine learning: it uses neural networks with many layers to learn complex patterns in text, images, audio and other data.

AI is the umbrella term, machine learning is one approach within it, and deep learning is a more specialized approach within machine learning. The simplest way to remember the difference is: deep learning sits inside machine learning, which sits inside AI.

How it works

These terms describe related concepts, not three competing technologies. A single product can combine all three.

Artificial intelligence: the broad category

AI covers methods for building systems that perform tasks such as reasoning, planning, recognizing speech and understanding language.

Not all AI learns from data. Some systems use knowledge and rules written by people. For example, a rule-based expert system might recommend a troubleshooting step based on a set of symptoms.

That does not mean every automated workflow is AI. A timer that sends an email at noon is ordinary automation; it does not become intelligent simply because it runs without human help.

Machine learning: finding patterns in data

With machine learning, developers train a model using examples. The training process adjusts the model so it can make useful predictions or decisions on new inputs.

For instance, a spam filter can learn patterns from emails labeled “spam” and “not spam.” Instead of someone writing a rule for every suspicious phrase, the model learns which combinations of signals are associated with unwanted messages.

Common approaches include:

  • Supervised learning: learning from examples with known answers, such as labeled emails.
  • Unsupervised learning: finding structure in data without predefined answer labels, such as grouping similar customers.
  • Reinforcement learning: learning through feedback about actions and their outcomes.

In many traditional machine learning workflows, people also choose useful input features, such as transaction amount, account age or purchase frequency.

Deep learning: learning through layered neural networks

Deep learning uses neural networks with multiple processing layers. During training, those layers learn representations that help the model handle complex inputs.

In image recognition, earlier layers may detect simple visual patterns, while later layers combine them into more complex features. This reduces the need to manually design every feature, although people still make important choices about data, model design and evaluation.

Deep learning powers many modern speech recognition systems, image generators and large language models.

One important distinction: training is not the same as using a model. Training changes its learned parameters. Using the trained model to produce an answer or prediction is called inference. A chatbot responding to your message does not necessarily learn permanently from that conversation.

Real-world examples

Customer support

A rule-based assistant might guide customers through a fixed troubleshooting tree. A machine learning model might classify incoming tickets by topic or urgency.

A deep-learning-based language model might draft a natural-language reply. The final support product could combine these methods with document retrieval and human review.

Fraud detection

A bank might use explicit rules to flag certain transactions and machine learning to identify unusual combinations of signals.

Deep learning can also help in some fraud detection systems, but it is not automatically the best option. Simpler models may be easier to maintain and explain, especially when the data is structured into rows and columns.

Writing and research

ChatGPT uses large language models to help with tasks such as writing, coding, analysis and everyday research. Those language models are examples of deep learning.

Perplexity helps users research questions through AI-generated answers with web citations. It illustrates how an AI product can combine generated text with information retrieval.

Neither a fluent answer nor a citation guarantees accuracy. For important research, open the cited material and check whether it supports the claim.

Speech and images

Speech-to-text systems convert audio into words, while image recognition systems identify patterns in pictures. Deep learning is widely used for both.

These systems recognize learned patterns; they do not necessarily understand a scene or conversation the way a person does.

Benefits and limits

AI can automate complex tasks, but the method matters. Rule-based systems can be predictable and easy to inspect. However, their rules may become difficult to maintain when exceptions multiply.

Machine learning can improve predictions at scale. It is useful when historical examples contain relevant patterns. Its limits include poor-quality data, biased labels and changing conditions that make older patterns less useful.

Deep learning can handle complex, unstructured data. It is especially useful for language, audio and images. Training large models from scratch can require substantial computing resources and data, although using a pretrained model is often much more practical.

Across all three, keep these limits in mind:

  • Errors remain possible: confident output can still be wrong.
  • Bias can carry through: systems may reflect imbalances in data or design choices.
  • Explanations vary: some decisions are much easier to inspect than others.
  • Privacy needs attention: sensitive information requires appropriate safeguards.

The best approach is the simplest one that meets your accuracy, reliability, cost and oversight needs—not necessarily the newest or largest model.

How to get started

  1. Define the task before choosing the technology. “Reduce time spent summarizing research papers” is more useful than “start using deep learning.”
  1. Decide whether you need a tool or a custom model. Most beginners and busy professionals should start with an existing application. Building and training a model is a separate technical project.
  1. Match the tool to the workflow. Use ChatGPT for drafting and explanations, or Perplexity for web-based research with citations. NotebookLM is another option to explore for research-focused workflows.
  1. Test against a small set of known examples. Compare outputs with answers you can verify. Track factual mistakes, missing information and how much editing is required.
  1. Add human review where mistakes matter. Check consequential outputs before using them in health, legal, financial or employment decisions.

If you are developing machine learning models, Weights & Biases can help track training runs. That is a different need from simply using an AI assistant.

FAQ

Is all AI machine learning?

No. AI also includes approaches based on explicit rules, search, planning and other methods that do not require learning from examples. Machine learning is one major branch of AI.

Is deep learning always better than other machine learning?

No. Deep learning is powerful for tasks involving text, images and audio, but simpler models can work better for some structured datasets. They may also be faster, less expensive and easier to explain.

Where does generative AI fit?

Generative AI describes systems that create content, such as text, images or audio. Most widely used modern generative AI systems rely on deep learning. However, deep learning also supports non-generative tasks, such as classifying images or predicting a numerical value.
